This spring, the number of applicants to Aalto University continued to rise from last year in the joint application process for bachelor’s programmes in Finnish and Swedish. There were altogether 12 452 applicants compared to last year’s 12 227 applicants, and this year the number of priority applicants was 8 267.

‘Thank you to everyone who applied, we are very pleased that the interest in our programmes is so great. I would like to wish all the applicants good luck for the spring and the entrance examinations’, says Petri Suomala, Vice President of Aalto University.

5 768 applicants applied to the Bachelor's Programme in Economics and Business Administration in Finnish, out of which 3 507 were priority applicants.

A total of 9 154 applications were received for the 13 programmes in the field of technology. This consisted of 5 140 applicants overall, out of which 2 755 were priority applicants. The number of applicants also includes applicants who have applied via open university and those who applied through their successes in the MAOL competitions. The most popular programme in the field of science and technology was Computer Science.

In the field of art and design, a total of 1 871 applicants applied for the 13 programmes, and 1 524 of them were priority applicants. The chart-climber of the year was Set Design for Film and Television. Its number of applicants increased by more than 64%, and the priority applicants in this programme accounted for 70%.

The figures were taken from the Studyinfo service immediately after the application period, so the figures may change slightly as the reports are updated and applications are processed.

The results of the national joint application process will be published by 9 July 2021 at the latest.

The number of applicants to master's and English language bachelor's programmes also increased

In addition to the joint application period for March, this year the application period has ended for master's programmes and the bachelor's programmes in English. Both application rounds were very international, and in the English bachelor’s application period alone there were applications from 119 different countries.

The number of applicants to master's programmes increased by 27%, and 1 331 new students were selected. Some 30% of the applicants had a Finnish higher education degree, and some 58% have completed a higher education degree outside the EU / EEA.  Similar to previous years, the majority of applicants with foreign university degrees came from China, India, Pakistan, Great Britain, and Iran.

The bachelor's degree programmes in English also increased their popularity in the application process, which ended in January, and their applications increased by more than 9%. A total of 4 699 applications were received for eight programmes in English. The results of this application round will be published 4 June 2021 the latest.

‘We are pleased that we have succeeded in developing our degree programme into something that attracts an increasing number of applicants. Another important part of our development work is the new website, where we have compiled our life-wide learning offering. We want to get people at different stages of their lives into education to deepen their competence’, explains Petri Suomala.
