Senior legal counsel Maria Rehbinder

Maria Rehbinder works as a senior legal counsel at the Academic Legal Services of Aalto University. She has worked with research data management related issues since 2014.

What is your role in Aalto University data support? I have drafted data agreement templates, and I advise on the legal issues related to use of research data containing
personal data.

What do you do in practice to help researchers with research data management? I have been involved in developing personal data templates such as Privacy Notice for Research Projects. I also go trough the Privacy Notice draft the researcher has written before it is given to research participants and I suggest changes if needed. I help with data agreements and data commercialization.

Which aspects of research data management do you see especially interesting and/or important? Creating FAIR data by default, building data ecosystems.

What do you think is the most challenging aspect of research data management at Aalto University now? Having a secure environment that is suited for analysing and stroring research data, including personal data and health related data.

Is there a tip on Aalto University research data support you would like to share? If you open publicly funded research data, the license should be CC BY 4.0. This will be required by new legislation implementing the open data directive.

Other thoughts you would like to share about research data management? Data is the new oil and data related skills are very valuable and sought after.
