Interdisciplinary course in Lisbon on plastic-free oceans- apply by 15 December

Within the topic ‘Ocean without Plastics’, the ULISSES course aims to creatively develop innovative technological solutions to characterise and mitigate plastic pollution, guaranteeing biodiversity and the sustainable reuse of these materials in applications with economic value. The course takes place online from January to April 2026 and face-to-face in Lisbon, Portugal, in July 2026.

ULISSES - University of Lisbon Interdisciplinary Studies on Sustainable Environment and Seas aims to raise awareness among students and society, favouring a deeper understanding of issues related to the oceans.

The initiative is aimed at university students who are looking to take part in an interdisciplinary and international project, who want to deepen their knowledge of the ocean and its importance for the sustainability of the planet, and who are looking to explore different career prospects. It will take place over several weeks, with an online component between January and April 2026, and a face-to-face component in Lisbon from 6 to 24 July 2026.

• Three universities are involved: the University of Lisbon, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Technische Universität Darmstadt.

The selected students will take part in an international team and supported by researchers and experts will be challenged to design the most innovative solution to the problems facing the oceans in a collaborative environment.

Ulisses is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) funded under Erasmus+ KA131. It consists of an intensive learning programme, offered by three partner institutions, combining virtual learning activities with physical mobility activities. ULisboa will be the receiving institution, where the learning activities during the physical mobility will occur. 

The programme is free and is worth 6 ECTS credits. Students can apply for an Erasmus grant from their Aalto School to participate in this Blended Intensive course (note: funding is limited). The course consists of a virtual and physical learning period and the credits must be included in the Aalto degree. The grant must be applied for no later than one month before the course starts. Schedule

• Applications from 15 November to 15 December, 2026
• Preparatory phase from 26 January to 4 April, 2026 (e-learning, compatible with the classes)
• Team Project from 6 July 24 July, 2026 (in Lisbon)
• Final presentation: 24 July (in Lisbon)
