Finnish design and student works on display in ARTEK Tokyo

Contemporary Collected displays Finnish design, student works alongside pieces by emerging and established Finland-based designers, crafters and photographers.
Art installation of arranged everyday objects on coloured mats in a white studio space

CONTEMPORARY COLLECTED is an exhibition concept by Assistant Professor of Interior Architecture Katrin Greiling, initiated in 2012. Originally focusing on design and every-day objects from Sweden, the fourth edition is now for the first time solely displaying Finnish design.

The collection brings together familiar Finnish everyday objects with works by students from Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture, alongside pieces by emerging and established designers, crafters and photographers based in Finland. Rather than organizing the material according to chronology, authorship or status, the exhibition adopts a deliberately non-hierarchical approach, grouping objects by color. This creates unexpected juxtapositions between different periods, contexts and modes of production, allowing relationships and affinities to emerge across conventional categories. By placing the ordinary alongside the authored, the familiar alongside the unfamiliar, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider how objects acquire meaning, value and cultural significance.
