Communication and language courses for doctoral students in period I

The registration for the courses happens in Sisu and usually starts one month before. Registration period per course usually ends either one week before or one week after the start of the course, depending on the type of the course. Period I runs from 2 September to 20 October 2024.

Writing and presenting

LC-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Engineering and Science 4.9.-9.10.2024 (in Zoom)

LC-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Engineering and Science aims to help doctoral students to develop their academic writing skills while writing up their research. Therefore, participants need to be in the process of writing either an article for publication or their dissertation. Students’ own texts form a key part of the course as they work to improve them. The overall aim of the course is to enable participants to write up their research more effectively and with greater confidence for an international readership.

Registration is open in sisu until 23.59 on Aug 26. The next opportunity to take this course will be in period 2. That group will be on campus.

LC-1336 Popularize your Research 24.10-5.12.2024 (in Zoom)

Time to let the general public know about your research!

Join us to work on one oral and one written project where you, for instance, prepare a press release about your research, rehearse for a TV or radio interview, or something else, relevant to you and your research.

LC-1331 Presenting Doctoral Research 22.10-26.11.2024

This is a course aimed at supporting doctoral students (from any Aalto school) in developing skills in presenting their research. The course is intended for participants who will be presenting soon either at a conference or in a seminar. Students’ own presentations form a key part of the course. During the course, students plan, structure, and visualize their presentations and then practice giving them. The practice sessions include giving a rehearsal presentation, upon which feedback is given and then implemented before giving a final presentation. Participants also practice strategies for asking, receiving, and deflecting questions from the audience.

LC-0510 Conference presentations (this group in English) 17.9.-1.10.2024  

How can you present your research in a clear and engaging way? And how can you channel nervousness into an energy boost during your talk? This course focuses specifically on conference presentations, where you'll have the opportunity to refine your presentation in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere.

How can you encourage and motivate others while fostering their success through your leadership? How can you excel in feedback interactions or challenging leadership communication situations? Join this course to explore leadership from a communication perspective and develop your skills in this practical hands-on course.

LC-1335 Preparing for the Doctoral Defence 4.9.-16.10.2024 (in Zoom)

Are you preparing to defend your doctoral thesis? Then this is the course for you! 

This course aims to support and develop doctoral students’ skills in presenting and defending their research.  During the course, participants plan and structure their Lectio Praecursoria and practice defending their research and written work in small groups. Students will be introduced to different coping strategies for anticipating questions and responding in an assertive, professional manner. Students will also give and receive feedback on their visuals, content and language use.
