Biketti containers arrive on campus – making bike parking safer and more convenient

Aalto University is committed to sustainable development and promoting environmentally friendly, healthy modes of transport on campus. A part of the effort, two innovative Biketti bicycle parking containers have been introduced to the campus.
Biketti

Biketti bike containers provide a simple, safe, and convenient way to solve parking issues for cyclists. They directly respond to the frequent feedback for better cycling infrastructure highlighted in the annual campus survey. With their innovative design, the Biketti units demonstrate the University's strong commitment to sustainable transportation and making everyday cycling a more attractive option for commuters.

The bicycle containers are located between the Computer Science Building (Konemiehentie 2) and Espilä, as well as next to the east-side entrance of Maarintie 8. They provide secure storage for 32 bikes (16 per container). Access is simple and smooth with a physical access tag or a mobile key via the Bitwards app. The container doors open in both directions, making it easy to roll your bike in and out. For safety, the doors do not close automatically, this prevents anyone from accidentally getting locked inside. A manual release is also available inside. Always remember to check that the door is locked when you leave.

Green roofs as experimental platforms

Biketti containers not only enhance cycling facilities but also add value to the campus environment. Their colors reflect those of Otaniemi's oldest building, an homage to Alvar Aalto's wooden shed, fusing history with the present. The vegetation planted on the containers' roofs is specifically chosen for their resilience and pollinator-friendly characteristics, fostering their survival and growth.

The rugged, sun-soaked rooftops of the containers serve as experimental platforms for conducting habitat tests. The absence of human interference and snow removal creates the perfect conditions for studying habitats exposed to sunlight. These innovative experiments assist in the formation of green corridors, nurturing the mobility of species between different habitats and promoting biodiversity within the campus.

Commuter cycling all year round

Biketti containers make commuting by bike an even more attractive optionThey protect bicycles from the weather and theft, while their ease of use supports a smooth daily routine. Commuter cycling is not only environmentally friendly and cost-effective, it also promotes health and well-being. Biketti is designed to serve cyclists year-round. It's here to stay and will continue supporting bike commuters even.
