Award of the Acoustical Society of Finland to Nella Näveri and Juha Vilkamo
The Acoustical Society of Finland presented at the Acoustics Days 2015 Conference in Kuopio, Finland, on September 2, 2015 an award of the Matti Karjalainen Fund for a fine thesis to two students of the Aalto University, Ms. Nella Näveri, M.Arch., and to Dr. Juha Vilkamo, D.Sc.(Tech.).
Näveri describes in her Master’s thesis the acoustics of auditoria. Her wide review of literature, a large set of illustrations, and interviews give new knowledge about the present state of halls and recommends perspectives for the future design of auditoria. The thesis also sheds light on the diversity of the architectural design and the complexity of designing large auditoria.
Vilkamo studies in his dissertation computationally efficient artificial reverberation and spatial sound reproduction systems. The results of his doctoral research are used in Android phones and in the new MPEG-H spatial audio standard.
The Acoustical Society of Finland presents awards biannually from the Matti Karjalainen Fund for important contributions in the field of acoustics in Finland. The Fund was founded in 2006 at the 60th birthday of the late Matti Karjalainen, who was a famous professor of acoustics at Aalto University. The goal of the Fund is to sustain education in acoustics by supporting related Master’s and doctoral-level studies and research.
