Aalto University has once again performed well in the international QS World University Rankings, maintaining its position as the top university in Finland. Its global ranking this year was 114, compared to 113 last year.

‘QS has ranked Aalto as Finland’s number one university for three consecutive years. That’s a fantastic achievement for a university that just turned 15,’ says President Ilkka Niemelä.

‘Aalto University has worked hard to ensure quality and impact. It’s great that QS recognizes a young, field-specific university like ours in its overall ranking and still sees us as the top university in Finland—right on the heels of the global top 100,’ Niemelä adds.

The QS ranking evaluates universities comprehensively across nine indicators, each with a different weighting. The criteria include research citations, academic reputation, employer reputation, international faculty, graduate employment, sustainability, international research networks, faculty-student ratio, and the proportion of international students.

Compared to last year, Aalto improved particularly in employer reputation and international research networks.

QS includes the top 1,500 universities worldwide in its ranking. This year’s number one was Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

There are an estimated 17,000 to 22,000 universities globally, depending on the definition.

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is one of the most influential global university rankings. In addition to general rankings, QS also publishes rankings by subject and region. For Aalto, subject-specific rankings are more relevant than overall rankings, as the university specializes in technology, business, and art and design.
