Aalto University was born to change the world. In early 2000’s, it became evident that there is a need to break down the barriers in research and education between science, technology, business and arts. On 1 January 2010, 3 major change makers with strong traditions, the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki merged as Aalto University.
Today, Aalto University is an international, multidisciplinary community of 6 schools and 20,000 bold thinkers committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. On top of our excellence in education and research, we have become a platform for startups, collaboration and lifelong learning.
Changing the world with donors
Even though mainly funded by the government, Aalto has been an interest to private donors even before it was born. From funding the legendary School of Economics building in Töölö in the 1940's to supporting cross-disciplinary research in the early 2000's, our donors have played a crucial part in Aalto’s success.
In the founding year 2010, private individuals, foundations and companies joined their strength in providing a stable base for a new university to take its first steps. In 2015, the second capital campaign further strengthened the foundations for research and education excellence in arts, technology, science and business. Consistent support has provided several professorships and research projects that would have otherwise been out of reach.
