Title of the thesis: Towards Cognitive Manufacturing: Integrating Ontologies, Digital Twins, and Large Language Models for Industrial Systems

Thesis defender: Chao Yang
Opponent: Prof. Shen Yin, NTNU, Norway
Custos: Prof. Kari Tammi,Aalto University School of Engineering

Modern manufacturing systems produce vast amounts of data, but this information is often fragmented and difficult to interpret. This thesis explores how digital twins, semantic models, and large language models can be integrated to enhance the understanding and support of industrial operations for human decision-making. The research introduces a standardized ontology for modelling production workflows, a digital-twin–based system that transforms real-time data into meaningful context, and a method that allows natural-language questions to be converted into accurate database queries. Together, these results provide new ways to integrate data and knowledge, improve situational awareness, and enhance the efficiency and usability of intelligent manufacturing environments.

Keywords: cognitive manufacturing, semantic technology, digital twin, large language model
