Opponent: Associate prof. Simon Hemour, University of Bordeaux, France
Custos: Prof. Jouni Paltakari, Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering
Electronic waste is growing worldwide, and most electronics rely on non-renewable, hard-to-recycle substrates. This doctoral thesis combines bio-based materials, electronics and microwave engineering to address the problem, with packaging as the target application.
A bio-based substrate was developed, and microwave devices were fabricated on it by aerosol jet printing. The thesis provides new knowledge on how the substrate affects microwave performance and printing quality, and on the durability of the printed devices.
The results show that bio-based substrates are a feasible alternative for printed microwave devices such as sensors and tags. Because the devices can be easily recovered, this approach can help reduce electronic waste.
Keywords: Printed electronics, Tempo-oxidized nanocellulose, Humidity sorption, Chipless RFID,
surface modification
