Multisensory Integration in XR

Marie-Laure Snijders
University of Twente

Abstract: The talk will describe the development of a multisensory lab at the University of Twente. The setup consists of an ambient thermal stimulation system comprising four “heat towers” with infrared (IR) panels and vertical blinders, enabling spatially interpolated and vertically targeted thermal stimulation. In parallel, it includes an airflow stimulation system that enables wind stimulation from any direction around the user with adjustable airflow speed and temperature. These systems provide a platform for a series of psychophysical experiments characterising perceptual sensitivity to thermal and airflow cues, as well as investigating cross-modal interactions. In addition, the aim is to investigate how these sensory modalities influence spatial perception and user experience in VR/XR. Ultimately, this research advances the understanding and application of thermal and aerotactile feedback in multisensory immersive environments.

Bio: Marie-Laure Snijders is a PhD candidate at the University of Twente and The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Her research investigates multisensory cue integration in spatial perception within virtual and extended reality (VR/XR), bridging the fields of human-computer interaction with psychophysical investigations. She focuses on thermal and aerotactile (airflow) cues, examining their perceptual characteristics as individual sensory modalities and their combined effects on multisensory perception and user experience in VR/XR.

Following the talk, there will be time for discussion. Welcome!
