Creativity and Arts in Organizations and Society (CAOS)
Aalto early-career research community exploring art and creativity in organizations and society
Dr. Valtasaari's CAOS seminar talk sheds light on the specific challenges of leading in the symphony orchestra context: What does it mean to be responsible for the work and wellbeing of over a hundred highly skilled artists? What kinds of leadership practices are needed in environments shaped by strong professional identities, high performance pressures, and intense emotional and creative labor? And how can management in the arts move beyond the romantic image of “stardust” toward a more sustainable and ordinary—yet no less meaningful—working life? She invites us to rethink leadership through a humanistic, research-based, and context-sensitive lens, offering insights that resonate well beyond the arts sector.
Pauliina Valtasaari is a Doctor of Music (D.Mus.), orchestra manager, professional supervisor, cognitive short-term therapist, and lecturer specializing in occupational wellbeing in arts and culture. She currently works as an orchestra manager at the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, where her work focuses on musicians’ wellbeing, professional development, and sustainable working practices. In addition to her current role, she has previously worked as a specialist in artists’ wellbeing at the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and served as President of the Finnish Music Medicine Association from 2020 to 2023.
