Important notice! The departments of Art and Media at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture have merged as of 1st January 2022. Professor Harri Laakso has been appointed as Head of the new Department of Art & Media.
All existing operations in education and research of the Department of Art and the Department of Media will continue in 2022, within the context of the new Department of Art and Media.

Study Options
The Department offers degrees in New Media, Visual Communication Design and Photography. Annual application period is from November to December for MA and March for DA studies. Find out the dates and application procedure for each programme from the study option specific page.

Research at the Department of Media
Our research activities include practice-led and basic research on art and design related topics, including visual communication and photography, visual communication design, media culture and heritage, new media design and learning, sound design as well as computer games.

About Us
We are a key contributor to the artistic and research scene in both Finland and abroad. Shaping the future of the field of media through academics, we provide education to future game changers.
Our faculty members also are an active part of the both artistic and academic field. They are responsible for teaching in our portfolio of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programs.
Our Story
The Department of Media was formed within Aalto University 2010 by a merger of the Media Lab with the units of Visual Communication Design and Photography.
