The 21st Century Art & Science Lab - Course

This course focuses into central topics at the intersection of art & science, exploring one focus phenomenon, such as evolving hybrid ecology, modified organisms, artificial and biological life, enhanced humans, evolution, and broad concepts of intelligence, among others. It is a practice-based, hands-on course that builds from introductory experimentation and wet-lab practice to artistic production, occasionally incorporating technological methods such as physical computing.

While laboratories are traditionally understood as controlled environments dedicated to scientific or technological research, this view often overlooks the potential for artistic experimentation. In the early decades of the 21st century, a growing number of artists have entered scientific labs, adopting and adapting scientific methodologies within their creative processes. At the same time, many artists have begun to consider their studios as laboratories, spaces for systematic, spontaneous, and/or theoretically guided explorations.

The course invites students from diverse disciplines who are interested in experimental artistic practice, critical reflection, and the development of their own creative work within the evolving field of art & science.
