Research Through Art and Design - course
The course introduces a variety of approaches, methodologies, issues and concerns in ‘research through practice’.
Here, ‘research through practice’ refers to a broad continuum of constructive artistic and design research approaches, as well as practice-led and -based research approaches. In the course we share and discuss with doctoral students the discourse that have evolved around the research approaches, especially in Aalto ARTS, and make visible the community that is working around the field. Therefore, we invite professors to contribute to the content of the course, who are currently working in the field in Aalto ARTS, or who have completed their doctoral studies in ARTS and currently work elsewhere within the research approach.

Students who successfully complete the 2 ECTS version of the course will be able to:
- Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of examples across a broad continuum of research through art and design practices including artistic research, practice-led, and practice-based research approaches
- Demonstrate an ability to connect and critically discuss across the examples including some common issues pertinent to all forms of research
- Critically articulate their understanding of the relation of artistic research to conventional research paradigms
Students who successfully complete the 4 ECTS version of the course will also be able to:
- Articulate a critical comprehension of more specific approaches (including artistic and -based research, practice-led and practice-based research) between theory and art/design practices
- Demonstrate an ability to motivate, integrate, and apply this comprehension to their own research or research plan.
ARTS-L0110, 2–4 credits.
By the end of the course, students write an essay where they position their creative practice in relation to the course content, literature, and class discussion.
Doctoral students take part in a dedicated 2-credit workshop introducing the Research Catalogue and its possibilities for artistic research.
