About the studies

Study objectives

Digital Systems and Design educates specialists in various fields of digital systems. This major gives you competence in engineering design, as well as project planning and management, employing tools from embedded systems, control theory, and signal processing.

The major covers interdisciplinary topics from electrical engineering and automation, computer science, communication science, information science, and electronics. Through these studies, you will gain expertise in a range of techniques covering mathematics, modeling and analysis of signals and systems, and electronics.

You will be proficient in the modeling and analysis of systems and have a good foundation in the broad field of computer networks. You will also gain professional experience through tailored industry projects and entrepreneurship training.

These competences will foster your solid mathematical background, diverse programming skills, goal-oriented problem solving, engineering design, and efficient project planning and management.

You will

  • learn from field experts in the evolving information technologies that define the future in the industry and society and
  • command various fields of modern electronics industry that are required by specialists

Through your studies in Digital Systems and Design, you will acquire

  • knowledge in efficient analysis, design and optimisation of complex systems
  • cutting-edge design skills tailored for engineering that make a difference in technical solutions
  • management skills that are sought after in leading industry positions
  • practical programming expertise in a range of languages relevant to industry
  • experience in project and team work through an industrial or industry-related project

Career opportunities

The programme aims to educate professionals in a diverse range of activities. Graduates of the programme will obtain the background to start their working life, for instance, as digital systems specialists, engineers, or technology entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the programme prepares students for advanced studies in engineering, science, and mathematics. Graduates of the programme will be well-equipped to pursue masters-level studies with the opportunity to become engineering scientists, business analysts, industrial researchers, and more.

By completing the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology, you will earn a Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree (180 ECTS), or tekniikan kandidaatti in Finnish. The degree is designed to be completed in three years.

After graduating from the BSc programme the student automatically has the right to continue studies in selected master's programmes. By completing the master's programme in the field of Technology in Aalto University, you will earn a Master of Science (Technology) degree (120 ECTS), or diplomi-insinööri in Finnish.

Further study options

As a bachelor’s student of the Digital Systems and Design major, you are entitled to continue your studies at the master’s level at Aalto University. This bachelor’s degree gives you a solid basis for further studies in all of the master’s programmes provided by the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. You may also apply to continue further studies at Aalto University at the master’s level in other fields.

More about the language of instruction

The language of instruction in the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology and the Digital Systems and Design major is English. The programme is conducted entirely in English, meaning that all courses and exams are in English. For students with sufficient proficiency in Finnish, it is also possible to study the 20-25 credit minor subject of the bachelor’s degree in Finnish.

Tuition fees

Citizens of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) member states are not required to pay tuition fees for degree studies. Non-EU/EEA students selected to the Digital Systems and Design major will be charged a tuition fee of €12000 per academic year. They are eligible to apply for scholarships awarded from the Aalto University Scholarship programme. More information on Scholarships and Tuition Fees page (aalto.fi).

Content of the Studies

The programme combines theoretical knowledge with applied experiences in the multidisciplinary fields required to plan and develop large digital systems, such as (autonomous) cars, planes, ships, satellites, etc. In particular, the studies cover the design of such systems as well as essential competences in networking, electronic circuits, estimation and learning, control and automation, as well as optical communication.

Building on the education of decent mathematical and programming competences, the programme educates and deepens their understanding through various integrated courses and workshops that foster hands-on experience and management skills through agile team projects.

These skills are today's key competences that make the difference in working life and careers. The Digital Systems and Design major trains English presentation and writing skills, as well as management and first industrial experiences.

Structure of the studies

The bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) is composed of basic studies of the programme (65 ECTS mathematics, programming, industrial engineering and management, obligatory languages, Aalto studies, orientation), the major in digital systems and design (65 ECTS including BSc thesis and seminar), the minor (20-25 ECTS) and elective studies (25-30 ECTS).

See the programme curriculum on the student portal Into.

The study environment in Aalto University is strongly international and studies are conducted in multicultural groups. The School of Electrical Engineering boasts 47% international teaching and research personnel and 24% of all professors in the School are from outside Finland.

Aalto University also offers diverse possibilities to develop global competence by e.g., completing part of the degree abroad in an international partner university (exchange studies), conducting practical training abroad, taking a summer course abroad or acting as a tutor for first-year students.

Co-operation with other parties

Part of the studies in the programme are conducted with partners from industry. This comprises excursions to companies as part of some lectures, guest lectures and the industrial training course in which students plan and complete an R&D project following development and management processes used currently in the industry.
