The energy transition requires new ways of thinking about energy, including its sources, production, markets, transmission and use. The Master's Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions is an excellent place for you to start reshaping our energy system.

The Master's Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions is divided into four majors. Studies in all majors begin by building a solid theoretical basis, which is then expanded upon in interdisciplinary and advanced studies to expand your view of the energy challenges facing our society.

The Sustainable Energy Systems and Markets major offers a firm theoretical base as well as practical tools and skills needed by engineers working on the field of energy systems. The focus is on the questions arising when transforming the present energy system to the carbon free future. This change not only concerns the production and delivery of energy in its different forms, but also the major changes in the energy end use and how these changes affect the power and energy markets.

Content of the studies

A reliable and affordable energy system is the basic requirement of a modern society. Today, energy systems face challenges with the flexible integration of different energy forms (power, heat, fuels) and with the increasing complexity of the systems due to distributed power generation and emergence of active producer-customers, i.e. prosumers. Integrating intermittent renewable sources, like solar, wind and wave energy, into the energy system is one of the main challenges of our sustainable future. This major offers a basic understanding of energy systems, the main challenges faced by our energy solutions today and possible ways towards a sustainable future.

The major offers practical tools and skills needed by engineers working in the field of energy systems. In order to prepare students for understanding complex and multidisciplinary problems in the field, the major is designed to be flexible. Courses include theoretical considerations, experimental work and industrial applications. The major prepares students for current and future challenges faced by energy companies, manufacturing industry, consulting companies and society. Students are well-prepared to pursue doctoral studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the Major, the student will attain the following learning outcomes:

  • Have a holistic view which enables analyzing complex dependencies in vast energy systems
  • Optimize and develop energy systems, taking into account different energy forms
  • Understand the role of various parties in energy markets
  • Develop applications for energy efficiency and sustainability
  • Gain the ability to analyze and evaluate existing and future challenges in the field of energy systems

Structure of the studies

The master’s degree (120 cr) consists of the major studies (66 cr), elective studies (24 cr) and a master’s thesis (30 cr). The major studies are divided into programme common courses, major common courses and advanced studies.

Advanced Energy Solutions master’s students are actively encouraged to spend a semester abroad, studying at one of the top-tier international partner universities of Aalto University.

Career opportunities

The graduates of the Master’s Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions are capable of acting as an expert of in at least one of the following fields, depending on the chosen major: new power and energy systems and markets, advanced energy and power production technologies, building and communal energy design and use, bioenergy or industrial energy processes.

Typical employers are energy companies, energy-intensive industries, engineering and consultant companies as well as universities and research institutes. The graduates will able to apply novel, adaptive and socially intelligent thinking and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration with well-trained project management skills for entrepreneurship initiatives concerning energy solutions.

Admission requirements 2021

The applicants are first evaluated based on Aalto’s general eligibility requirements (https://www.aalto.fi/en/study-at-aalto/applying-to-masters-programmes). Applicants meeting the general eligibility criteria for master's studies are evaluated according to the evaluation criteria below.

Firstly, the applications are evaluated based on the following (critical) criteria.

  • Academic performance
  • Relevance of previous studies
  • Suitability

Only the applications who fulfill the requirements for these criteria will be evaluated against the full set of evaluation criteria.

After the evaluation of the remaining criteria below, the best applicants will be selected based on the joint evaluation of all criteria.
