Description

Data Science is a multidisciplinary discipline of extracting knowledge from all kinds of data, including structured and unstructured, often very large, and computationally demanding data. It employs theories and techniques from the traditional fields of computer science, information sciences, statistics, and mathematics.

In the Data Science programme within the EIT Digital Master School, students learn fundamental principles, techniques, and versatile skills for computational data analysis, scalable data processing and management. After completing the programme, they have all necessary skills for becoming a successful data scientist, one of the top professional careers world-wide. Given a new real world problem, they can identify the underlying computational problems, choose suitable data preprocessing, analysis and modelling methods, tailor and apply the existing algorithms as needed, evaluate validity of the results, and interpret and present them to experts of other fields.  At the same time, they also acquire extensive business skills by learning how to bring an innovation to the market and developing a successful business model. These additional entrepreneurial skills will give students their ticket to a successful career.

The ICT Innovation programme has separate application periods and admission procedures from the other Master's programmes offered by Aalto University. Further information on the admission is available on the EIT Digital Master School website.f

Language of instruction

In the master’s programme, the language of instruction is English.

Tuition fees and scholarships

Students admitted to Master's Programme in ICT Innovation (EIT Digital Master School) - Data Science are eligible for scholarships and liable for tuition fees according to EIT Digital's tuition fee and scholarship scheme.

Students are not liable for paying tuition fees to Aalto University or eligible for Aalto University scholarships. Please see EIT Digital Master School website for more information.

Structure of studies

EIT Digital Master School programmes are double degree programmes in which studies at taken at two different universities in two different countries. The programme leads into two Master of Science degrees (double degree) from the two universities the student has studied in.

Overall, the two-year programme comprises a total of 120 ECTS credits:

  • Major (60 ECTS)
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship minor (30 ECTS)
  • Master’s thesis (30 ECTS)
Master's Programme in ICT Innovation

Specialisations

The programme is a double degree programme, which means that you will study at two European universities and in two different countries. Aalto University offers Data Science studies as both entry (first-year) and exit (second-year) studies. For the full list of universities, please visit the EIT Digital Master School website.

The first year is quite similar at all Data Science entry point universities with foundation courses in data handling, data analysis, advanced data analysis and data management, visualization, applications, and university specific electives. An important part of the programme are also the Innovation and & Entrepreneurship (I&E) courses.

The Aalto specialisation, Machine Learning and Large Scale Computing, provides both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for handling, analyzing and modelling various types of data, including very big data. In the second year, students can deepen their knowledge in statistical and computational principles of machine learning and data mining, including Bayesian data analysis, reinforcement learning, stochastic methods, and convex optimization; they can familiarize themselves with processing more complex data types, like graphs, time series, speech, text, and image data; or study techniques for large scale computing and data management. An ideal candidate to the Aalto specialiaation is mathematically inclined, technically proficient, has entrepreneurial spirit, and interest in solving real-life problems.

More information on the programme content and curriculum can be found in the Student guide.

Internationalisation

The EIT Digital Master School programmes are inherently international because the studies take place at two different universities in two different countries. The programme provides its students with a profound experience of working and studying in multiple countries in an international environment.

Further study opportunities

The programme qualifies for doctoral studies (Doctor of Science in an applicable field).

Career opportunities

Data science is a highly innovative area. The data scientist simultaneously masters scalable data management, data analysis, and domain-area expertise to extract key knowledge from the data and solve real-world problems. Data scientists’ skills are highly valued across all fields within the private sector, government, and non-profit organizations.

Research focus

The studies in the programme are closely related to the research conducted at the relevant departments of the consortium universities including Aalto University's Department of Computer Science.

Co-operation with other parties
