Aalto University mentoring programme

The Aalto University student-alumni mentoring programme brings together Aalto's master's and doctoral students and alumni who have graduated from Aalto University every year. Both our Finnish and international students and alumni participate in the programme. You can apply for your own mentor when you are at the master's stage in your studies.

What is a mentoring programme?

At Aalto, mentoring refers to a long-term and goal-oriented discussion relationship in which a mentor working in the professional world serves as a discussion partner, coach, and supporter for the mentored student, i.e. the actor. The core of the mentoring programme is the mentoring meetings between the mentor and the actor, held about once a month.

The programme lasts for about six months, starting in December and ending in May. You can apply for a mentor annually in November.

Why participate?

With mentoring, you can, among other things

  • discover and clarify your own career aspirations
  • expand your knowledge of the professional world and alternative careers
  • develop your professional skills and improve your job search skills
  • develop your interaction and communication skills
  • challenge yourself to encounter new ideas and perspectives
  • expand your network of contacts

The mentoring programme is popular among School of Business students

Mentoring has a long tradition in the School of Business, the first School's own mentoring programme started in 1999 in cooperation with KY. Since 2012, the School of Business mentoring programme merged into Aalto University's programme. Annually about 70 business students takes part in the programme. Your mentor can be a School of Business graduate or an alumni who has graduated from other Aalto fields.

We receive good feedback annually from participating students.

Aalto International Talent programme

The Aalto International Talent group mentoring programme brings together Aalto University's international master's and doctoral students and companies and organisations looking for talent. The programme offers students the opportunity to grow their networks in Finland, and they also gain insight into the Finnish professional world, work culture, and their own field. Annually, about 150-200 Aalto students and 10-20 companies participate in the programme.

We recommend the programme to first-year international master's students or doctoral students at Aalto University who want to build a career in Finland after graduation.

In the programme, you will engage in discussions with recruiters, experts from the mentoring company, and other students in the group about professional-related matters. You will also have the opportunity to visit the mentoring company.

The programme runs from December to February. Students apply for the programme in October.

Why participate?

  • You will create personal connections with recruiters, industry professionals, and Aalto alumni.
  • You will learn about the Finnish professional world and work culture.
  • You will get to know your mentoring company and the opportunities it offers.

The mentorship experience was extremely valuable to me. Even though the mentor was from a different field, we connected very well.
