Coaching and guidance of work

Aalto University offers coaching and work-counselling to support employees and doctoral students in managing their work better.

Coaching

Coaching is a collaborative process in which coaches help participants to develop in terms of personal and professional potential, as well as to clarify ways of improving self-leadership.

Coaching organised by Aalto HR Services:

  • Career coaching for doctoral students and post doc researchers.
  • Self-leadership and work management coaching programme is open to all employees. It is usually carried out in Finnish, but occasionally also in English for academic employees.
  • Coaching to develop work practices of research groups is open to interested research groups at Aalto.

The range of coaching offered varies from year to year depending on need. Coaching provided centrally by Aalto University is free of charge for participants. In addition, different units can organise coaching on the basis of their specific needs

Coaches

Coaching is carried out by external coaches from outside Aalto who have solid experience with regard to the challenges in an academic environment and work context.

Career coaching for doctoral students and post doc researchers is offered by coaches from within Aalto University who have been trained specifically for this purpose.

 

Work-counselling

Work-counselling focuses on examining, assessing and developing one’s own work. It is suitable for anyone who is interested in exploring their work and developing as an employee, for example, when starting in a new role. Work-counselling is also well-suited for project groups and teams.  

Aims of work-counselling include for example:

  • Support professional development.
  • Offer new perspectives on work.
  • Support in managing change situations and new roles.  
  • Develop capabilities to handle conflicting interests and difficult situations at work.
  • Help in work management.
  • Alleviate pressure from work demands.
  • Increase self-knowledge and team members’ common understanding.
  • Improve team collaboration, interaction and work atmosphere.

The aims are always agreed upon together with the participants at the start of the work-counselling process.

Work-counsellors

The work-counsellors are either external coaches from outside Aalto or staff members with training in work-counselling.
