Accessibility statement for the REDCap survey tool

REDCap survey tool is subject to the EU's accessibility directive, the aim of which is to ensure equality in a digitalised society and set uniform requirements for accessibility.

Accessibility of the service has been self-assessed. The information in this statement is based on the self-assessment conducted by the administrators and public sources, such as accessibility statements created by other organisations using the service.

The REDCap survey tool will be launched in 2026. The target level of service accessibility is WCAG 2.1, level AA. The service undergoes continuous small-scale development work and the web content does not yet meet the target level in all respects.

Aalto University IT Services is committed to observing accessibility standards. The following measures are implemented in order to achieve this goal:

  • accessibility is part of our mission statement,
  • accessibility has been taken into account in the university practices,
  • a member of staff has been appointed to be responsible for accessibility at the university.

Aalto University's IT Services’ objective is to maintain a website that is technically accessible and understandable in terms of its contents and that is clear and easy to use for all types of users.

The REDCap survey tool does not fully meet accessibility requirements. In terms of the user interface for researchers, accessibility is partially achieved. We instruct, guide and support researchers in creating surveys with the system in accordance with accessibility requirements. The website requires further improvements, however, in the following areas:

  • Some links and images lack descriptive text
  • Users may add custom code (HTML/JavaScript/CSS) to surveys, that do not meet accessibility requirements
  • Small text size in the user interface
  • Lack of sufficient ARIA tagging or heading structure
  • Some controls are not fully navigable by keyboard or screen reader
  • Present contrast or layout challenges on certain devices or at high zoom levels

Please provide feedback to the system administrators if you notice accessibility issues on the site:

We will respond to feedback within 14 days.

REDCap consortium continues work to address the accessibility issues that have been identified in order to achieve full compatibility with WCAG 2.1 level AA.
