A student graduating from the Master's Programme in Film:
- Is able to act as the Head of Department (HoD) in their field of expertise in feature films, feature length documentaries or TV productions

Major description
The Master in Documentary Film trains thoughtful, creative, and critically engaged documentary filmmakers for both national and international contexts. The programme combines artistic practice, research, and professional development, preparing students to work creatively and reflectively within the evolving field of documentary cinema.
Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, theory, and ethics of documentary filmmaking while exploring its future as a form of storytelling, art, and research. Through workshops, filmmaking exercises, and seminars, they develop their own artistic voice and strengthen their powers of observation, narration, and expression.
The programme emphasises the integration of theory and practice. Students learn to combine conceptual thinking with technical and creative skills, enhancing their professional competence and engaging critically with contemporary documentary forms and practices. The opportunity to direct a master’s diploma film provides a distinctive framework in which to apply their artistic and research skills, contributing to the ongoing development of documentary expression.
The learning environment is enriched by visiting lecturers and artists from Finland and abroad, offering multiple perspectives and fostering international dialogue. Collaborations with film professionals, companies, and institutions enable students to build valuable networks and gain insight into the professional landscape.
Students also have the opportunity to produce graduation films in collaboration with established production companies and to receive mentorship from experienced industry professionals. These experiences prepare them to enter — and often begin participating in — the professional field during their studies.

Major description
Master's studies in the major in Film Sound Design train artists and professionals to work as sound designers and sound recordists in all areas of film production. The master's studies aim to improve the student's skills, especially in films sound design and film sound theories. In addition, the student gains a greater understanding and mastery of their professional area's artistic, production, and technical content by utilising courses and exercises that steadily increase in their level of difficulty.
A sound designer and sound recordist gains a comprehensive knowledge of their field's practices, means of artistic expression, technical equipment, and theoretical concepts. A vital goal of the education is to develop the student's talents and personality further, impart additional technical, working life and artistic skills, advanced knowledge of the field and its history, and develop management and research skills.
Essential skills to be learned are dramaturgical and content thinking in cinematic expression, the ability to perceive sound and space, management, working life, communication and cooperation skills, managing sound design and the dramaturgical concept and technical realisation process of a feature-length film, a more profound knowledge of the traditions and modern trends of their field, and the ability to think critically and analytically.
After graduating from the master's programme, a sound designer has a mastery of sound design's overall artistic and technical process – from pre-production to post-production and the finished film. During the studies, the student deepens their knowledge in all phases of sound recording, sound post-production and sound design in film and artistic and production cooperation in film and television productions.
The goal of education is to impart the capacity to pursue doctoral studies.

The Major of Film Sound Design concentrates on the student's personal development in artistic practice through creative enquiry and collaboration, theoretical and critical thinking. In addition, it aims at the students' professional competence as film sound designer in feature films, documentaries and tv-series.

Major description
In the advanced studies of the major, the student learns how to work as a screenwriter for different forms and genres of film and television. Following the practice in the field, a step-by-step process and feedback are integral parts of the screenwriting courses, which are implemented both as individual projects and group work. Studies in the theory of screenwriting provide broader perspectives into the tradition and future of the field.
The aim of the studies is to enable the development of the student’s individual expression and personal voice. The student is encouraged to choose the elective studies of the personal study plan to support this goal. Elective studies can be selected from the major of screenwriting, other majors at Aalto University or other universities. In the general studies of Film and Television, students familiarise themselves with entire field of film and television, and its various job descriptions and practices from both an artistic and production perspective.
General studies also include theoretical studies that encourage holistic artistic reflection and practice-based research.
For the master’s thesis, the student prepares an artistically high-level screenplay either as an independent project or by working as a screenwriter in a joint thesis film created by a student group. The thesis work also includes a research section in which the student addresses a topic that they find relevant both personally and to the field of screenwriting.

Learning Outcomes
The goal of the master’s level studies in Film and Television Producing is to deepen the student’s skills towards independent audiovisual entrepreneurship, film and television producing, working in research or development projects in producing or acting in demanding leading and expertise positions in the audiovisual field.
At the end of their studies, students will have the vision, management skills and specialized skills required to complete high-quality film and television productions. These skills combined will allow them to work in a changing profession and develop visionary approaches in the field.
During the studies students will deepen their understanding of the narrative and genres of film and television productions as well as their production methods, audiences and distribution both domestically and internationally. Students gain the ability to act internationally and credibly as a producer in terms of funding, production and distribution.

Major description
The major in Film Editing aims to develop the student into an expert of viewing and seeing, a storyteller and an artist in post-production. Film Editing students specialise in mastering cinematic narration and visual entities. They become acquainted with both the aesthetic tradition of their own area and the possibilities offered by the latest technology.
Students edit an artistically high-quality film as part of their master's thesis, which can be fictional or documentary. The thesis work can be an independent project or a thesis film as groupwork shared with other film students. The thesis also includes a theoretical part, in which the student explores a personally or professionally relevant topic in film editing.

Major description
The master's programme in Film Directing major, strengthens the student's skills in ideation, idea development, story building, and narration while developing the director's personal cinematic style and author identity.
In master’s studies in the major in Film Directing, the student develops their artistic thinking and cinematic vision.
The studies consist of four elements:
- Compulsory courses common to all students within the department, focusing on skills in entrepreneurship, working life, analytical abilities, and providing research readiness.
- Compulsory and elective studies specific to the major in Film Directing.
- Elective studies
- The Master’s Thesis
The film directing studies consist of thematic modules, which combine theory, practical workshops, and independent artistic work and research. Some parts of the studies focus on actor directing methods as well as producing one's own material through writing. Other parts concentrate on laboratories built around one central theme or technique, conducted together with one or more majors. Collaborative courses organized with the Theatre Academy are also part of the major studies.
The master's studies include 30 credits of compulsory joint programme courses. These courses cover entrepreneurship and working life skills, analytical skills, and provide research skills. During the master's studies, the student learns to comprehend the entirety of long-form film projects, as well as the importance of resources in the planning and execution of films and TV series, and becomes familiar with the Finnish film and TV industry (production companies, financing, and distribution).
In the master's studies, the student challenges their artistic thinking, explores trends in film and TV drama, their language of forms, and dramaturgical structures, and explores the foundations of their personal artistic signature. The studies strengthen the director's role throughout the production process, providing tools for different directing methodologies and helping the director recognize and enhance their personal directing style. According to the personal study plan (HOPS / PSP) developed together with the academic supervisor, the student can deepen their expertise in elective studies in screenwriting, visual storytelling, or sound.
The student can choose to focus their studies on either film or narrative television storytelling. This choice can be supported by courses from other majors, such as screenwriting and production.
Major's intended learning outcomes
A student who graduates from the major in Film Directing can:
- Independently operate in the professional role of a director in both feature films and TV drama series.
- Understand the artistic process of feature film making in its entirety and can lead and build the process in a content-driven and inclusive manner.
- Independently and collaboratively ideate, develop, and construct artistically high-quality cinematic stories for long formats (film and TV series).

Major description
During the education, the student’s personal vision is strengthened with a focus on artistic-technical cinematography competence and co-operation skills.
The job description of a cinematographer is reinforced and deepened in extensive master’s study modules and workshop exercises, both in Finland and internationally and by means of courses on vocational technology and artistic expression. The education is mainly based on practical learning by doing, work in small groups, personal guidance and dialogue-based interaction. During the studies, the student is introduced to all phases of preliminary planning in cinematography and artistic and production cooperation in film and television productions.

Major description
Master studies in Costume Design: Performing Arts and Film enhance the development of the students' artistic expression and conceptual thinking, and expand their creative, professional and technical skills and competency as visionary costume designers. The students have the possibility to experiment on advanced concepts for costume design in live performance, film, and media, to reflect on their learning, and be responsible for artistically demanding productions through the design and creative processes of costume.
The studies include entrepreneurial aspects, time and budget management skills, practising collaborative artistic work and communicating ideas to a technical team. Students also focus on the history, theory and research of costume, and enrich their research skills. The learning is based on a practice-led research approach, where the students’ personal strengths and interests are taken into consideration in planning the content of the studies.
The studies are organised in collaboration with other majors in the Master's Programme in Film and Television and with the University of the Arts/Theatre Academy, as well as with external institutions, individual artists and professional companies. The studies are continuously enriched and updated by new design practices, new technologies and cutting-edge research in the field.
Major's intended learning outcomes
The Costume Design: Performing Arts and Film major of the Master’s Programme in Film and Television focuses on the students’ personal development in artistic practice through creative enquiry and collaboration, theoretical and critical thinking. It aims at advancing the students’ professional competence as costume designers in projects for screen and the performing arts.
Students who graduate from the major in Costume Design: Performing Arts and Film (MA) are able to:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of costume within contemporary creative practice in live performance, film and media.
- Explore their artistic potential and develop a personal artistic vision in costume design.

Master's thesis
To graduate, students must meet the aims set for the thesis. The aim of the master's thesis is that:
- Students demonstrate command of the field of the master's programme and ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the programme independently;
- Students demonstrate ability for research-oriented work on an artistic, theoretical or applied research topic and demonstrate ability to use data and source material for research purposes;
- Students demonstrate good communication skills for work in the field of study.
The thesis may be a piece of theoretical, artistic or applied research, a work of art or a combination of these; it may also include a production component. The production component may be, depending on the field, for instance, a design, a work of art, an exhibition, or project. Theses always include a written component. If the thesis consists of a design or other production component and a written component, the student must specify the emphasis to be given to the different components in the evaluation. However, the thesis is always evalu-ated as a whole, with all the components of the thesis included in the evaluation.
The recommended extent of the written component of the thesis is 25–70 pages (approx. 50 000–140 000 characters) depending on the extent of the possible production component.

Drawing and painting
Drawing and painting courses consist of two-dimensional expression carried out by various methods. The work involved emphasises the importance of practice, or ‘learning by doing’, but without losing sight of the connections to theory. The studies include working with drawing, painting and mixed-media. The student will gain increased awareness of the workings of visual perception and of different ways of describing the surrounding world and our relationship to it. The course also examines the role of ideas and concepts in art as well as art’s relation to design, its role in society and its significance.

Colour and perception
Colour and perception studies focus on visual perception and the theories about it. The English-language version of the course contains both theory and practical assignments. The course covers basic concepts about colour and the principles of colour perception. The course covers basic colour concepts and principles of colour perception. Colour composition and contrasts and their effects – mainly in two-dimensional expression – are studied by experimental means. The course ‘Colour - Light - Space D’ is aimed mainly at Master’s students of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture. Through lectures and assignments, it deals with the role of colour and lighting in architecture and in building a city’s image.

Sculpture
Sculpture studies provide students with the skills needed to work with contemporary sculpture and design. Skills that students can apply in their own fields are emphasised, such as how to research new materials, working methods and methodologies. The ‘Ways of Making’ courses offer practical experience working in a sculptor’s studio, and ‘Metal Casting’ introduces foundry techniques. ‘Digital Sculpture’ introduces new and developing technologies in 3D art, and ways to combine these with traditional sculptural techniques. Conceptual and theory-intensive sculpture studies are also included within the contemporary art courses programme.

Printmaking
Printmaking involves the handcrafting of printing plates as well as the prints produced by various methods (copperplate, woodblock, limestone, mesh screen). Prints are regarded as original artworks. Basic courses in printmaking offer the rudiments in a variety of printing techniques and develop the student’s command of the tools used. The intermediate courses deepen the knowledge and skill levels of students in their chosen method and enlarge their range of artistic expression. As printmaking is a specialisation study, beginners are recommended to take it during their second year of Bachelor’s studies.

Students educated in Finnish or Swedish
For students educated in Finnish or Swedish, i.e. whose official mother tongue is Finnish or Swedish, language studies are designed to be completed as part of the Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design) or another Bachelor’s degree. Students who have not completed the required language studies before starting to pursue the master’s degrees specified above must complete them either as elective studies or in addition to the studies required for the degree. In such cases, the language requirements are as follows:
- 9 credits: 3 cr in written and oral communication, 3 cr in the second national language of Finland, and 3 cr in one foreign language.

Students in this category may fulfil the language requirement for their Master's degree by completing courses that support their studies or their stay in Finland. Students who have been educated abroad are recommended to take Finnish courses as well as English courses that focus on the field-specific language of arts or technology and fulfil the language requirement of the degree. Students may also choose to fulfil the language requirement by completing courses in another foreign language of their choice; all courses counted towards the requirement must be taken in the same language. Language studies may either be counted towards the electives of the degree or completed in addition to the studies required for the degree.
