Rupesh Vyas

Rupesh Vyas is a Senior University Lecturer at Aalto University, Finland, where he has taught for a decade, first as Professor of Design Practice and subsequently as Associate Professor. Since its launch, he has led the Information Design focus area within the Visual Communication Design major, contributing to its curriculum development, teaching, and practice-based research. His work spans information design, data visualisation, visual communication, and creative computation, with a focus on the intersection of design, science, technology, and society.

Previously, Vyas was Senior Faculty at the National Institute of Design (NID), India, where he contributed to the development of information and interaction design education. His professional practice includes major national projects such as the 2011 Census of India, the National Population Register, and national visual standards for the driver's licence.

At Aalto, Vyas leads collaborative visualisation research with scientific and public-sector organisations, including the Aalto–FinnGen collaboration. His team develops information design and interactive visualisation tools that help researchers explore complex genetic datasets, identify relationships within the data, and communicate scientific findings more clearly. The work also contributes to making complex genetic research more accessible to wider audiences, bridging scientific discovery, visual communication, and public engagement. A significant milestone in this work is his contribution to the cover artwork of Nature, Volume 613, Issue 7944, created in collaboration with his research team.

Vyas is the Lead Organiser and Conference Chair of Visualising Knowledge, Aalto University's biennial international conference on information design and data visualisation. His research has been published in peer-reviewed venues including Information Visualisation and Bioinformatics Advances.
