Hossam Hewidy

I am a Senior Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning at the Department of Architecture, holding a DSc, MSc, and BA in Architecture. I currently serve as the Head of Major in Architecture within the Master’s Programme in Architecture, as well as the Head of the Minor in Urban and Regional Planning.

With a background as both an architect and urban planner, I bring extensive professional and academic experience. My early professional involvement in urban regeneration and upgrading informal settlements in Cairo gave me deep insight into the systemic challenges of inadequate planning policy, social housing deficits, and participatory governance. These experiences continue to inform my research on the intersection of strategic and local detailed planning, as well as placemaking in diverse urban contexts. My research interests include multicultural planning, placemaking, power dynamics in planning, spatial justice, land use and climate change mitigation, planning education, and public libraries as urban hubs. My work has been published in several leading international journals (see Research Contributions).

I have contributed to a number of research projects and consortia, including those funded by the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment’s Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, the BEMINE consortium, and most recently, the EU’s regional funding instruments.

I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and represent AESOP in the Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN), where I also serve as Secretary.
