World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies Innovation Award to Sino-Finnish research on fuel cells

Professors Bin Zhu from China University of Geosciences and Peter Lund from Aalto University were awarded World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies Innovation Award for their work on advanced fuel cells.

Professors Bin Zhu from China University of Geosciences and Peter Lund from Aalto University have developed a new type of fuel cell based on using mixed oxide semiconductors and ionic conductors. A fuel cell converts fuels to electricity with high efficiency, and they have no moving parts. Unlike traditional fuel cells with a 3-layer structure (cathode, electrolyte, anode), these new materials enable a so-called singe-component structure, which would be more effective for mass-production of fuel cells. The best performance results achieved are around 0.8 W/cm2 at 550 C. Academy of Finland has supported the research work at Aalto University. The Sino-Finnish research teams have extensively published results on the new fuel cell type.

The professors were awarded the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies Innovation Award  in Wuhan, China on August 22, 2018 for their work.
