Welcome to the third UWAS discussion session where video artist, Artist-in-Residence 2018, Pilvi Takala and doctoral candidate Pauli Pakarinen discuss the topic "Value Creation in Art and Business".

Pilvi Takala is an artist living and working between Berlin and Helsinki. Her video works are based on performative interventions in which she researches specific communities in order to process social structures and question the normative rules and truths of our behaviour in different contexts. Her works show that it is often possible to learn about the implicit rules of a social situation only by its disruption. Takala is currently Artist-in-Residence at Aalto University School of Business.

Pauli Pakarinen is a doctoral candidate at the department of Management Studies, Aalto University School of Business. His main areas of interest are field theory, decision-making, valuation, and the effects and use of models. His current PhD project, drawing on extensive qualitative datasets and observation, and the sociology of culture and knowledge, examines macroeconomic modeling and simulation, monetary policy-making, and competitive struggles on fields.

This is the third event in a series of six monthly discussions, that is part of the University Wide Art Studies (UWAS) studies. As part of the UWAS course, students have the opportunity to do a single research or an artistic project that examines the themes of these events.

The aim of the events is to bring together professionals from different disciplines to discuss multidisciplinary practices between art, science, technology and business. The discussions are open to anyone interested in Aalto University's various schools.

In the first event, the Postdoctoral Researcher Juuso Tervo from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and Project Manager Kalle Airo from the School of Science discussed about the social impact of universities. The theme of the second discussion was “Mind the gap - how science sees the brain and how mind sees science”, discussed by Professor of International Art Education, and Head of the Department of Art at Aalto University Kevin Tavin and Academician of Science and Professor Emerita of systems neuroscience and brain imaging at Aalto University Riitta Hari.

Date: 15 March at 5–7 pm.

Venue: Harald Herlin Learning Center, Makerspace, Otaniementie 9, Espoo
