The Aalto University Academic Affairs Committee has selected Tero Ojanperä as a new member of the university’s board and Mariana Amatullo for a second term, starting on 1 January 2025. The term of office on the board is three years.

Tero Ojanperä’s unique experience in business, deep-tech startups, board work, and academia, as well as his position among the world’s leading technology visionaries, makes him an excellent addition to the Aalto University Board. He also has extensive social and business networks both nationally and internationally. Ojanperä holds a PhD in electrical engineering. Due to his board appointment, Tero Ojanperä will step down from his other duties at Aalto University.

Mariana Amatullo, a board member whose term was up for renewal, was elected for a second term. Professor Amatullo serves as Vice Provost for Global Executive Education and Online Strategic Initiatives at The New School in New York and as Professor of Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design in the United States.

Current Board Chair Mikko Kosonen is stepping down, having served the maximum term.

Kristiina Mäkelä, Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and Aalto University Provost, extends her gratitude to the long-serving Board Chair:

‘Mikko Kosonen has made a significant contribution to Aalto University, leading us decisively towards our current standing as an internationally recognised, multidisciplinary, and diverse academic community. He has encouraged the university’s engagement in societal discussions and promoted collaboration with the business sector and other key stakeholders. Kosonen’s extensive experience and strategic expertise have been a valuable asset to the Board. We extend our heartfelt thanks to him.’

Board member and Vice Chair Ilkka Kivimäki, whose term was also up, is stepping down at his own request after serving two three-year terms on the Aalto University Board.

‘We thank Ilkka Kivimäki for his dedication, expertise, and excellent collaboration in his board duties. His long background as an entrepreneur, investor, and startup coach has brought an entrepreneurial mindset and invaluable insights from the growth company sector to the board’s work,’ says Kristiina Mäkelä.

As of 1 January 2025, the Aalto University Board will consist of Mariana Amatullo, Karel Luyben, Andreas Mortensen, Marita Niemelä, Hanna Sievinen, and Tero Ojanperä. The process of completing the board with a seventh member is underway.
