Municipal infrastructure roadworks at Otakaari and Alvarinaukio from August

The roadworks will begin at Alvarinaukio square in August 2024 and continue from the intersection of Otakaari and Luolamiehentie towards Servin Maijan tie in September 2024. The street infrastructure and other municipal infrastructure will be renovated and coordinated with the new area plan. Improved pedestrian and cycling paths will be built along Otakaari. The current underpass next to TF will be removed and replaced with stairs and a more accessible connection. The roundabout at Servin Maijan tie will remain.

The redevelopment of municipal infrastructure in the eastern branch of Otakaari and Alvarinaukio square will begin in August 2024. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. The pedestrian and cycling paths on the eastern branch of Otakaari are currently modest, and the street areas are not clearly separated.

The plan is to maintain access for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the construction. Also, access to properties and parking areas should remain open despite the construction work. Both lanes of Otakaari will be available during the construction, but in narrower sections, Otakaari may occasionally become a single lane road.

The work is scheduled to begin in Alvarinaukio square on 12 August 2024, continuing on Otakaari to the underpass (called Oikosulku) from September onwards. The section from the underpass to the intersection of Servin Maijan tie is scheduled to be completed between by December 2025. The City of Espoo is the client for the project, and KMS Palvelu Oy is the main contractor.

The underpass will be removed and replaced with an accessible stair connection

The amendment to the are plan will result in additional student housing being built along Otakaari. This change will eventually increase pedestrian and cycling traffic on the street and to some extent, vehicular traffic as well. The street's traffic safety and pedestrian and cycling conditions will be improved by building bike lanes and wider pedestrian pathways. Parking will be relocated from the road to parking bays.

The underpass at Teknologföreningen and the associated stairs will be removed because the stairs are not accessible. The underpass and stairs will be replaced with an accessible stair connection and a shallower pedestrian and cycling connection on the plot. The underpass will be out of use by December 2024.

Due to new construction, the flying squirrel pathway across Otakaari will move to the Teekkarikylänpuisto area. The flying squirrel pathways will be considered with eco-1 connections, preservation of vegetation and new plantings. The contract includes construction and demolition work for streets, water supply, district heating, and other technical systems and structures.
