Ilkka Tomperi has been appointed as Professor of Practice in Real Estate Investment at Aalto University

Ilkka Tomperi, PhD (Finance) (b. 1975) has been appointed as Professor of Practice in the field of real estate investment at the Aalto University School of Engineering. . The five-year term of the appointment begins on 1 August 2022. The position is part of the Real Estate Economics Research Group at the Department of Built Environment.

Tomperi will continue in his main job as Executive Vice President of YIT’s Property Development segment, where he started in 2021. He previously worked for several years as Investment Director and Head of Real Estate at Varma, a pension insurance company, and has been employed by CapMan, Franklin Templeton and the State Pension Fund of Finland (VER).

Ilkka Tomperi is an internationally acclaimed expert in his field and has been a member of the Management Board of INREV (Investors in Non-Listed Real Estate Vehicles) since 2017. INREV is a key player in the field of indirect European real estate investment. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Master's Program in Finance at the University of Vaasa.

'The real estate sector forms the basis of Finland's national wealth and collects a significant share of all investments. I am delighted to welcome Ilkka Tomperi, a respected international expert in real estate investment, who is well placed to combine academic teaching and research with the private sector and real estate investors,' says Gary Marquis, Dean of the School of Engineering.

'It is great to become part of the Real Estate Economics Research Group and to teach real estate investments combining theory with practice. Real estate sector and real estate investing are going through significant changes and also the timing of my appointment makes the work highly interesting,' says Ilkka Tomperi.

Tomperi defended his dissertation at the University of Vaasa in 2005 in the field of economics. The topic of the dissertation was Liquidity Effects, Timing and Reasons for Open-Market Share Repurchases. In 2009 he was awarded IPD 2009 Prize – Best Paper on Real Estate Investment by The European Real Estate Society. Tomperi has written, among other things, an article on Performance of Private Equity Real Estate Funds, Journal of European Real Estate Research (2010).

He has been a visiting lecturer in the Master's Programme in Finance at the University of Vaasa since 2002 and from 2010 a trainer in INREV courses for professionals in the non-listed real estate industry.

Professor of practice positions are fixed in term and part-time in nature, intended to bring in leaders and experts from companies or the public sector to act as developers and bridge builders between the university and relevant industries. The job profile is weighted toward teaching.
