EMPIRICA at the 2nd BICCS Conference
The Biennial International Conference for the Craft Sciences, BICCS, is a platform for communicating craft research within, and beyond, the academia. The conference is organized by The Craft Laboratory which is part of the University of Gothenburg’s Science faculty, affiliated to the Department of Conservation. The BICCS 2023 took place at the university’s campus in Mariestad, Sweden, in September 20–22, 2023. Altogether 59 articles (including 9 exhibition articles and 5 performance articles) were presented. The contributing 103 researchers of the research presented were from 15 countries in 4 continents. Keynote speakers in the BICCS 2023 were Dr. Nithikul Nimkulrat from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Canada, and Dr. Maikel Kuijpers from the Leiden University, Netherlands. In the conference, post-doctoral researcher Priska Falin presented From an Embodied Understanding to Ethical Consideration during Creative Practice (Falin, P., Mäkelä, M., Falin, P., 2023), and doctoral researcher Sara Hulkkonen presented Sensing the Rhythm – Analysing human and non-human movement in a glassblowing process (Hulkkonen, S., Lötjönen, M., Mäkelä, M., 2023). Additionally, Luis Vega and Priska Falin were co-authors in doctoral researcher Anniliina Omwami's (University of Helsinki) paper From not yet knowing to achieving directionality: On the roles of materiality in multi-sited, interdisciplinary studio settings (Omwami, A., Vega, L., Mehto, V., Falin, P., Seitamaa-Hakkarainen, P., 2023).
