The lobby of Aalto University Undergraduate Center buzzed with excitement when companies and students met on 18 January at the Summer Job Day! event. This year, there seemed to be a wide variety of summer jobs and internships on offer for Aalto students.

Companies are competing for Aalto students

Many companies want to find the most potential talents at the start of their studies and train them into permanent employees as their studies progress. A summer job is a good place to start your journey into becoming a top expert in your field. This is what happened to Johannes Isohookana, who studies engineering.

'Last year, I found a summer job at Helen from this event and now I'm working there on a permanent basis as a product manager designer,' he says.

For those who have studied a little bit longer, the event offered information on different internship opportunities. It was noteworthy how extensive, versatile and international most programmes are.

'ABB offers 1 000 summer jobs, and the application process to our 6-month International Internship programme is open,' says Heidi Pääkkönen, Employer Branding Specialist.

'Fujitsu offers as many as 15 positions to students in our two-year Future Graduate programme,' tells Anne Wendelin at the Fujitsu stand.

Aalto students are known for their versatility

To find the right people, companies have invested in recruiting processes that often consist of several phases, even when applying for a summer job. The students are well aware of this, and appointments for the CV clinic organised by EC, Elisa, PwC, Deloitte and the K-Group filled up quickly.

'A good CV and a resume that reveals the student's genuine motivation and interest towards the job is a ticket for the next round,' said Jani Mikanmaa at the OP Banks' stand.

During the event, many companies praised the openness and courage of our students and the fact that they had clearly prepared in advance before coming to talk with them at the stands.

'Students clearly want a job that is significant and affects the lives of people in a company that shares their values,' explains Heljä Asikainen from the K-Group.

The Summer Job Day! was organised by Aalto University Career services.
