Bachelor's Students Successfully Complete Research Internship

Three bachelor's students from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University, Mikhail Kirillov, Ronja Lehti, and Maria Nisar, have successfully completed their research internships as part of the course CHEM-A1510: Fundamentals of Research Work.

The students conducted their internships at the Textile Chemistry Group, where they were supervised by Dr. Md. Reazuddin Repon, Shubhajit Dutta, and Tonmoy Saha. They presented the outcomes of their research projects on 9 July, demonstrating the knowledge, technical expertise, and practical research skills they developed while contributing to ongoing studies in sustainable textile processing and recycling technologies.

Mikhail Kirillov completed his internship under the BioSusTex project. His research focused on advanced textile recycling methods, including color removal from indigo-dyed denim waste using solvent extraction and from reactive-dyed cotton waste using sodium dithionite bleaching. He also performed comprehensive analyses of stripped fabrics using spectrophotometric measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CHNSO elemental analysis, and degree of polymerization testing. In addition, he gained practical experience in dope preparation and regenerated fiber production using the innovative Ioncell technology.

Ronja Lehti carried out her internship as part of the TexirC project. Her research investigated cotton coloration using reactive dyes and evaluated the influence of dye structure on dyeability. Her work included repeated washing of dyed fabrics to simulate textile waste, sequential color removal from reactive-dyed cotton waste, optimization of process parameters such as time, temperature, and chemical concentration, and characterization of dyed and stripped fabrics through spectrophotometric analysis.

Maria Nisar participated in the TWWP project, where her research focused on removing color from reactive-dyed cotton waste using an alkali hydrolysis process. She optimized process parameters, including treatment time, temperature, and chemical concentration, and evaluated the effectiveness of the treatment by analyzing stripped fabrics through spectrophotometric measurements, weight-loss assessment, and surface morphology studies.

The internship presentations highlighted the students' valuable contributions to research supporting sustainable textile recycling and the circular economy. Attendees have congratulated the students on the successful completion of their internships and wished them continued success in their academic and professional careers.

Professor Ali Tehrani, Head of the Textile Chemistry Group, congratulated Mikhail Kirillov, Ronja Lehti, and Maria Nisar on their successful completion of the internships. He praised their dedication, research achievements, and meaningful contributions to the Textile Chemistry Group's ongoing research projects, expressing confidence in their future academic and professional endeavors.
