Aalto University is home to researchers working at the frontier of artificial intelligence. Some of that work has the potential to become more than research — to address real problems, create new industries, and contribute to Finland's deep tech future.

The Innovation Postdoc is a new initiative by the Aalto Innovation School designed to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world impact. Innovation Postdoc provides soon-to-be or recent doctoral graduates with a salary-funded position where the goal is not to publish more papers, but to build a growth company.

You will work on validating your technology with real users and partners, developing a business model, and preparing for the next step — whether that is external investment, a spinout, or another commercialisation pathway — supported by Aalto's innovation infrastructure, coaching network, and peer community.

Applications are now open for the Artificial Intelligence track. We are seeking the most motivated researchers in AI to turn their discoveries into impact.

Who should apply?

This is a 12-month funded position for doctoral researchers and postdocs who have a concrete result, technology, or invention with commercial potential, and who are ready to dedicate their full focus to exploring it. To be eligible, you have a doctoral degree (PhD) completed or submitted the thesis from Aalto University or you are working currently at Aalto University as a postdoctoral researcher.

We are looking for researchers with the right mindset to become founders. You do not need a business background, but you must be ready to adapt.

What we offer?

We provide an environment for innovation, removing the friction so you can focus on building.

  • Funded Runway: A 12 month salaried contract focused 100% on increasing the innovation readiness of your work.
  • Unmatched Network: Personalized coaching from leading deep-tech experts, seasoned entrepreneurs, and investors most founders never get to even meet
  • Tier-1 Supercomputing: Priority access to LUMI (one of the world’s most powerful AI-optimized supercomputers) and the Triton Cluster for rapid iteration.
  • Domain-Specific Data: Exclusive access to Aalto’s curated Data Hubs, including Health, Satellite, and Bio-economy datasets.
  • Dedicated Innovation Space: Access to a physical environment designed for commercialization, separating you from the constraints of daily academic duties.
  • Streamlined IP Support: Professional support for IP transfer and standardized spinout terms designed to attract top-tier VCs.
  • Aalto Ecosystem Access: Direct entry into the heart of Finland's strongest entrepreneurship ecosystem, with connections to over 100 new startups annually.
