Aalto’s art & design excels as 6th in the world

Aalto University maintained its excellence in the field of art and design, sharing 6^th place globally in the QS World University Rankings published on 22 March 2023. This field-specific ranking covers 54 academic fields and close to 1 600 universities around the world.

‘Research and education in art and design can provide new answers to and perspectives on the world’s many challenges. It’s exciting to be recognised among the very best in the world in this area. This is the best that a Finnish university has done in the QS field-specific rankings so far. A big thanks belongs to our entire community,’ says Tuomas Auvinen, dean of the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

In the field of architecture and built environment, Aalto kept its top 50 spot, ranking 48^th (42^nd last year).

The university ranked in the top 100 in other fields. Aalto’s business and management studies ranked 76^th (74^th last year), while computer science & information systems stayed 84^th (84^th) and materials science improved its ranking to 80^th (95^th).

The QS World University Rankings by Subject emphasise a university's reputation both in the world of academia and among employers, as well as reflecting its research publications and citation numbers. The weighting of these factors in the rankings varies between fields.

The QS World University Rankings also compare universities as a whole, and Aalto ranked 116^th in the latest QS overall ranking, published last year.

Aalto University specialises in technology, business studies and art, and thus the most relevant rankings for Aalto are field- and subject-specific. Depending on the criteria used, there are between 17 000 and 22 000 universities in the world.
