A short history of Making Waves

Hello, great to have you here!

Making Waves started in 2020 as a project to address the so-called “leaky pipeline” in academia, particularly fields concerned with Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM), gender balance in STEMM, and gender interest in STEMM from a young age.

Making Waves was originally ideated by dr. Stavrina Dimosthenous with the initial core team composed by prof. MilicaTodorovic, dr. Ondrej Krejci, and communication specialist Matthew Allinson. Over the years Making Waves has hosted a series of events to raise awareness on such issues, you can take a look at our past event in the events schedule section.

In 2021 most of the original core team left Aalto, and dr. Enrico Glerean, dr. Barbara Keller, and dr. Cintia Pacchiano joined Ondrej to continue organising more events, extending the original focus on gender balance in STEMM and expanding it to various issues related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

In academic year 2023-2024, Enrico Glerean is continuing organising more events, with the help of Ida Salin, Marja Niemi, and other helpers from Aalto Communication and Dean's Unit from the School of Science.

Would you like to join Making Waves and help organising the next events? Then please get in touch with Enrico.

If you want to stay up to date, you can join the Making Waves email list, more info at https://www.aalto.fi/en/making-waves/contact-information-making-waves

The project is funded and supported by the Aalto SCI-Diversity Fund and the Aalto School of Sciences.
