Low-light detection is a critical enabling technology for applications in defence, security, healthcare, medical diagnostics, and emerging consumer devices. However, existing detector technologies either lack sufficient sensitivity or remain prohibitively expensive, limiting their adoption and slowing innovation. There is a clear unmet need for detectors that combine high performance with affordability and scalable manufacturability.

This project aims to meet that need by developing a new generation of ultra-sensitive and intelligent optical detectors that are compact, smart, cost-effective, and optimised for real-world use. Our approach integrates CMOS-compatible materials, novel device architectures, and machine learning–based algorithms to maximise sensitivity, suppress noise, accelerate response time, and reduce production costs. Designed to align with established semiconductor processes, the detectors will be scalable and suitable for portable, wearable, and remote applications. Alongside technical development, the project places strong emphasis on commercialisation and market readiness. We will build a validated business case, supported by IP protection, licensing strategies, and early collaboration with industry partners, to ensure a clear route to market.

By bridging cutting-edge physics with manufacturable design and machine learning–based algorithms, this project will deliver both a breakthrough photodetector technology and a solid commercialisation pathway, creating opportunities for new business and reinforcing Finland’s position as a leader in the global photonics industry.
