Jaakko Ahvenainen, MSc donated a sum of 100,000 Finnish markkaa and 246 Kone Oy Class B shares to the Helsinki University of Technology with a deed of donation dated 26 February 1998. The donation was given for the purpose of establishing a memorial fund in memory of his father Fabian Ahvenainen, who died on 7 March 1978. He later supplemented his donation twice; on 1 October 1998, he donated a further 20,000 Finnish markkaa and on 13 December 1999 700 Nokia shares. Part or all of the profits produced by the foundation's capital are distributed annually in the form of grants or recognition awards to students and junior researchers of bridge engineering and structural engineering and building physics at the School of Engineering as well as to engineers, who have just graduated with Master’s or post graduate degrees.
The Dean of the School of Engineering decides on the basis of a proposal by a three member grant committee on the size of grants and recognition awards and on their recipients.
The grant committee announces when application for grants open or grants a recognition award with no application procedure.
Grant opening and deadline announcement
The grant committee for the Aalto University’s Fabian ja Jaakko Ahvenainen Foundation announces grants that will be admitted in recognition of the studies completed either in the field of bridge engineering or in the field of structural engineering and building physics or as support for postgraduate studies in these fields. The grants range from 1500 euros to 5000 euros. The grants and their values will depend on the number of applicants and the level of applicant’s studies.
If you have any questions regarding the grants, please contact:
Department Coordinator Viivi Riihimäki, tel. +358 504797759
Mr. Lauri Salokangas, tel +358 408322717
Eligible grant applicants include Master's degree students and post-graduate students of the School of Engineering at Aalto University as well as persons who recently completed their Master's or postgraduate degrees at Aalto University and familiarized with bridge engineering, structural engineering or building physics in their studies.
A short free-form application to the grant committee should describe the applicant's specialization in bridge engineering, structural engineering or building physics and the applicant's academic performance as well as the applicant's contact information (name, email address and telephone number). The application must also include the name of the thesis and the name of the thesis supervisor. The applicant is asked to mention in the application whether the emphasis of applicant’s studies has been on “bridge engineering” or “structural engineering and building physics”.
Enclosures: extract of study records or degree certificate with course list
Applications must be submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering via email to ahvenaisenrahasto@aalto.fi. Application period is yearly from the beginning of December until the end of the next year January. There will be separate announcement when the application period opens.
The Fabian and Jaakko Ahvenainen Foundation equally supports both the field of bridge engineering and the field of structural engineering and building physics in the long-term. In the assessment of applications, the purpose of the donator of initial capital to promote constructive structural engineering will also be considered.
The grants will be published and awarded in March. Grant recipients will be informed by email. Due to the corona pandemic, the date and arrangement of the grant event will be decided later.
