Improving Usability in Healthcare

Johanna Kaipio

Abstract:

The relationship between usability, patient safety and quality of care is evident. Poor usability associates with user fatigue, increased error rates and low user satisfaction. Errors in electronic health record use or in medication ordering documentation may endanger patient safety. In addition to professional users, patients are increasingly utilizing electronic health services. Experiences of patients have obtained more recognition as the customer-oriented approach has become prevalent in healthcare sector.

In the presentation, I approach the topic 'improving usability in healthcare' from three viewpoints: i) monitoring the development of the clinical IT systems from the end-users’ viewpoint in a national level, ii) integrating usability into the procurement process of healthcare and social care systems, iii) improving patient experience through eHealth solutions. I provide examples and experiences on measuring usability and user experience in various contexts, including Children’s hospital. In addition, I describe how the work has contributed to real-life decisions, e.g. in Apotti procurement, and share my visions of further research.
