Fast and reliable optimization methods for the design and operation of marine vessels
In the near future, maritime transportation will experience notable changes due to electrification and increased autonomy. New technologies, such as autonomous guidance solutions and battery-electric powertrains, offer possibilities for improving the safety and efficiency of maritime transportation. However, conventional design methods and onboard decision-making capabilities can fail to take full advantage of the new opportunities. This thesis focuses on applying modern optimization methods to important decision problems in naval engineering. The thesis demonstrates a novel possibility for fast system-level design optimization of new vessel concepts, such as battery-electric vessels. The thesis also lays the path for employing computationally robust modern optimization methods in a real-time environment with strict runtime and reliability requirements.
