Prove Your Value: Interview Strategies for Doctoral Researchers

Have you ever wondered why interviews that start well do not lead to an offer? Do you find yourself explaining your research when the panel is actually asking what you can do for them?
Interview

In our events, we are committed to Aalto University’s principles for a safer space.

Many doctoral researchers believe that a strong CV and a solid publication record will speak for themselves in an interview. The truth is a bit different, and this workshop will show you why.

This workshop gives you the tools to walk into an interview, in academia or industry, and prove the value of your doctoral experience with concrete evidence.

Why it matters?

Interviews are rarely won by the most qualified candidate.

They are won by the candidate who explains most clearly what they can do, how they work with others, and what results they have delivered. Many doctoral researchers answer like a candidate defending a thesis rather than a professional presenting evidence, and lose ground in exactly the moments where they are strongest.

This workshop helps doctoral students and researchers prepare structured, convincing answers for recruitment panels in industry, public organizations, and academia.

What you'll learn

  1. The most common mistakes researchers make in interviews
  2. How academic and industry interviews differ, and what each panel is listening for
  3. How to answer "tell me about yourself" in two minutes
  4. How to build evidence-based answers with a simple structure that panels remember
  5. How to handle difficult questions about overqualification, salary expectations, and career gaps
  6. How to prepare for an academic job talk or teaching demonstration
  7. How to close the interview with questions that show judgement and genuine interest

A Unique Feature of This Workshop:

From Defending Your Thesis to Proving Your Value

Through practice with real interview questions, participants will see how the same doctoral experience can be told as an academic defence or as professional evidence, and which version convinces the room.

Who should attend?

Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers preparing for interviews in industry, the public sector, or academia, or wanting to build confidence before they start applying.
