MAGICS Talks

MAGICS is the national infrastructure for human in the digital world, and a community built around six academic nodes across Finland: Aalto University, Tampere University, Uniarts, University of Lapland, Turku University of Applied Sciences, and University of Jyväskylä. This event is the first in series of Talks organised at each MAGICS node this year.

In the first event of the MAGICS Talks series in 2025, we’ll be delving into digitally augmented clothing with Professor Yu Xiao, who is leading the Wearable Systems Lab at Aalto University: How garments can transform into interactive, data-rich experiences capable of monitoring our well-being. First, director Marcus Korhonen from Aalto Studios will introduce MAGICS. The presenter of the event is journalist Sonia Zaki, Uusi Juttu.

Professor Yu Xiao, leader of the Wearable Systems Lab in Aalto University, stands at the forefront of the intersection between wearable technology and human-centric design, driving innovation that bridges the digital world with our everyday lives. Her research focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT), smart garments, and sensor-based applications that enhance health, well-being, and beyond. 

At the core of her research is the commitment to harness technology as a force for positive societal impact. Her team’s visionary prototypes emphasize practicality and user-friendliness, ensuring that technological advancements never lose sight of the human experience. She is deeply interested in collaborative projects where engineers, designers, and artists unite under a shared goal: to enrich daily life through inventive digital capabilities.

Director Marcus Korhonen Marcus manages the overall operations of Aalto Studios and is the CTO of MAGICS.
