Lungs of the City: an exhibition on the carbon cycles of urban green
When
Where
The carbon cycles in cities have been studied only recently. Traditionally, attention has focused on nature outside cities. Urban forests are the first to come to mind as carbon sinks, although surprisingly in Helsinki half of the natural carbon sinks in the urban compose of built green. In addition to trees, other types of vegetation, such as shrubs and lawns, also play a role. Soil is often a larger carbon reservoir than vegetation, which is why soil health should not be forgotten even in cities.
In the exhibition, the results of the CO-CARBON project are presented visually. One of the works on display is a large 3 x 2 meter map, which allows you to check the canopy cover of a familiar block. Also included is an experimental short film Lungs, inspired by research data, made by artists Teemu Lehmusruusu and Roberto Fusco.
The Lungs of the City exhibition will be on display at the Think Corner from May 5 to October 16, 2026, and can be visited during the Think Corner’s opening hours. The exhibition is free of charge.
The exhibition is part of the festival that concludes CO-CARBON’s six-year season, which also includes the final seminar “Where is urban green in climate action?” at Tiedekulma on May 20.
