- More and more demands for teachers. What kind of issues create high stress?
Could co-teaching be inspiring, enhance own learning and own wellbeing? Is co-teaching just another laborious idea making planning even more sticky, having to spend time planning with people, whose ideas are actually not as good as mine. Let’s see a drama and see how collaboration looks like. Elina Kähkönen (experienced co-teacher) will be commenting the situation and giving hints for the actors. Come and see, if it is possible to build high-quality connections and share the load with co-teachers. This session lasts 30 minutes, and it will be inspiring the discussions in other workshops. No entry during the show. Come and see it!

Seminar type of workshop of an exploratory pilot to empower teachers and students to care of the course content and the learning and teaching experience. In this workshop we go through the journey of learning the power of feedback. We will take a look at possible effects of continuous feedback on teacher well-being. We will also take a look at enhancing students’ metacognitive skills through continuous self-assessment on course contents. The designed tool, Dynamic Feedback System will be presented and discussed through student experiences in using the tool. Finally, we will talk about the role of emotions in university studies. This workshops constitutes as an end seminar on our Aalto Online Learning pilot project.
Student well-being is connected with student achievement. Analogous relation between teacher well-being and teacher performance has been argued to exist (McCallum & Price 2010). Teacher’s self-efficacy (TSE) has been extensively studied. In their literature review, Marjolein Zee and Helma Koomen (2016) found indirect effects between TSE and psychological well-being through classroom activities. High TSE seems to predict well the positive factors. Self-efficacy for student engagement predicts higher levels of teachers’ personal accomplishment (Zee & Koomen, 2016). Aalto Online Learning pilot project Dynamic Course and Programme Level Feedback System (DFS) has design features to extend teacher’s understanding of course participants’ emotional climate and use this information to further engage with students and empower teacher to intervene here during the course.
Learning design: How a structured process of learner-centric design can both save teachers time and have a positive impact on student learning experience. The presentation/demo is based upon FITech’s learning design toolkit, showcased through case examples of certain course development sprints. More info on FITech’s learning design tools.
VR HUB WORKSHOPS
Do you want to make virtual reality as part of your teaching? VR Hub is here to guide you on your course towards VR. In the Learning@Aalto Gala 18.12.2019, VR Hub will organize a morning workshop about virtual reality in educational use. There are two parts in the workshop - you are welcomed to attend only one or both of them!
10:15 - 11:00 INTRODUCTION TO VIRTUAL REALITY
By joining this workshop, you will learn about the most useful VR applications and try the design tools and telepresence apps suitable for even not-so-tech-savvy teachers and students. Ask us your most ardent question regarding virtual reality!
11:15 - 12:00 TAKE YOUR COURSE TOWARDS VR
Together with VR experts and workshop participants, we will brainstorm new ways of how VR or AR could enrich the educational content and make your course even more engaging for your students. This is a change to bring your course plan and your VR ideas to the table!
Workshop for teachers about the emotions and anxiety that the climate change is causing for students. This workshop will give tips on how how to take these feelings into account when teaching.
A gratitude workshop about the learning experiences of the academic staff. Workshop lead Luis Bellido is a former architect and holds an MA in Nordic Visual Studies and Art Education from Aalto. He is currently in the certification process of International Coaching Course in Growthroom.
Teachers receive their course feedback via a standardised form. Additionally, teachers are provided with an opportunity to ask own questions, which not all teachers benefit from. Teachers are often alone when receiving course feedback, and especially the young and otherwise new teachers may feel anxious about processing the feedback they have received. In this workshop, participants can practise structuring the received feedback by reflecting it with the course learning objectives, the course teaching and learning methods, and to the planned areas of development. The results are discussed and summarized as the reversed feedback for students.
As a part of bigger national research related to teacher wellbeing and emotions related to teaching (HowUTeach), about 30 Aalto teachers have been interviewed during fall 2019. In the workshop, the participants will discuss about the link between teaching and wellbeing, and further, talk about the role of emotions in university teaching. We will share the various ways one can recover from teaching-related stress, and the ways one can inhibit stress. We will focus on discussing how we can improve our well-being (as a teacher).
Teachers' corner information
Looking for a chance to show your teaching and present you methods, skills and ideas to Aalto community? Or to get new ideas for your own teaching? Teachers’ corner gives you a chance to showcase your achievements, to meet new likeminded people and to see how others are teaching. We are looking for a variety of fields, teachers, methods and presentations to give a presentation of 10 minutes in English followed by a short discussion.
To register as a performer, fill the registration form and let us know your preliminary topic and if you have any special needs in addition to your contact details. We encourage you to use different teaching and activation methods. In case we need to make a selection between proposals, variety of fields and schools will be used as a primary method. We will confirm your participation and send you additional information before the event.

Learning Research Poster Exhibition information
What does research say about teaching and learning - based on Aalto-driven data?
This poster session is organized for to share knowledge about the themes, results, researchers etc. also for the researchers themselves to collaborate between discipline. The poster session will be in Makerspace at the same time with Demo session (13:30-15:00).
Present your poster (size: A1) by filling the title, the presenters, and an abstract (100-200 words) to the registration form.
Questions to answer by the posters: Who are the individuals doing research on teaching and learning in Aalto? Are there research groups in this research area higher education? What kind of questions do they examine? What discipline-specific higher education results have already been achieved? What kind of events of, e.g., Academic Societies, congresses, yearly international events do the academics participate and share the results?

Educational Leadership Forum 3/2023 - Flourishing degree programmes: wellbeing and the relations between leading, teaching and learning
The theme for this event is flourishing and wellbeing degree programmes. The Forum is an event for Aalto´s educational leaders such as programme directors and heads of majors. The purpose is to offer possibilities for interaction and networking to support educational leadership at Aalto.

The sure sign of spring, the Mechatronic Circus, is here again.
