Peter Styring is Professor of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry and Associate Fellow in the Understanding of Politics at the University of Sheffield, UK. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institution of Chemical Engineers. He also holds the designations of Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Chemist (CChem). His research focuses on carbon dioxide (and carbon) utilisation within a circular economy. This covers the whole system from carbon capture, catalysis, social impact, life cycle and Techno-economic analysis, policy development, and process engineering from pilot demonstrators through to the commercialization of systems. Peter has a first degree and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield and joined State University of New York and the University of Hull as PDRA in Organic Chemistry before becoming Lecturer in 1990. He joined the University of Sheffield Chemical Engineering at Sheffield in 2000, becoming full Professor in 2007. Peter is also Professor of Public Engagement having been awarded an EPSRC Senior Media Fellowship in 2006. He is a former national ski coached and combined this with research in snow sports engineering resulting in TV and radio presenting including making documentaries for the high school national curriculum in science (https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/30865/how-science-works-engineering-gold) and appearing on the front page of Svenska Dagbladet.Prof.

Custodians of Carbon: Project Flue2CHEM
Carbon is the element of life and an essential component of most of the materials and chemicals that characterize modern living. We are now at a crossroads where we need to move from a linear economy of extract-use-dispose to a circular economy where we re-use and recycle carbon. We are there standing at the start of a new industrial revolution. We now need to become custodians rather than users of carbon, where carbon provenance will become of primacy. Carbon dioxide utilization will hold at least one of the keys to unlock the future.
We will need policy change, financial and fiscal realignment, and innovation to open new markets. Flue2Chem is set to become a game changer not only because of the ground-breaking science and engineering, but also because it brings together global industrial leaders in a unique consortium that aims to innovate through collaboration within an extended supply chain ecosystem.
This Keynote Lecture will consider the background to the project and how carbon dioxide can be captured and converted into surfactants that will remove fossil carbon from the supply chain. The stakes are high, but so are the rewards. Funded by Innovate UK and involving 13 companies and 2 universities the urgency for change is reflected in that a short 24 month timescale to delivery has been mandated.
