This thesis presents a novel nanostructured material ”grass-like alumina” (GLA) — a porous thin film coating with gradient refractive index and high surface area. This work describes fabrication methodology in detail and introduces several applications of GLA.

Due to gradient refractive index it acts as an excellent anti-reflective coating. Reduction in reflection can be achieved across wide spectral range extending beyond visible light and even for light coming at close to glancing incident angles. GLA can also be made superhydrophobic, which adds self-cleaning properties to the coating.

GLA can also be utilised to make a high surface area electrode. Such electrode is shown to enhance energy storage capabilities of a super capacitor and has a potential to be used in batteries and other devices.

The applications developed in this thesis are on a competitive level with the state of arts in the corresponding fields and presented research has led to several patent applications and commercialisation activities with Business Finland.
