Defence of dissertation in the field of computational structural engineering and mechanics, Viacheslav Balobanov, M.Eng.

From modelling natural microstructured materials to the design of artificial metamaterials.

The public examination of the doctoral dissertation of Viacheslav Balobanov, M.Eng., will be held on 18th June 2018 at 12.00 at the Aalto University School of Engineering. The title of the dissertation is Computational structural mechanics within strain gradient elasticity: mathematical formulations and isogeometric analysis for metamaterial design. Field of the dissertation is computational structural engineering and mechanics, materials modelling.

From the beginning of the last century, a number of research efforts have been devoted to the formulation of multi-scale theories capable of involving material microstructure to the description of the mechanical response of solids and structures. Today, there is a special demand for such theories due to the size reduction of engineering “constructions” to micro- and nano-scales as well as the prevalence of micro-architectured materials and metamaterials. Undeniably, the ability to model and simulate the behaviour of such materials provides more efficient and extreme engineering designs and more robust decision-making processes.

The primary goal of the dissertation is to provide reliable numerical methods to the field of microstructured solids and structures. A special emphasis is given to one of the aforementioned theories, strain gradient elasticity, and to the development and analysis of the corresponding physico-mathematical structural models with rigorous and efficient general-purpose numerical simulation tools. In the capacity of such tools, isogeometric analysis based on the paradigm of integrating the geometrical modeling and engineering analysis is chosen.

The work covers bars, 2D and 3D solids, beams and shells, hence comprising almost all the fundamental structural models forming the main building blocks of modern architectural and industrial design in structural and mechanical engineering. The models and methods studied in the dissertation have been validated and verified in several ways, including comparisons to experimental data and fine-scale modelling. Altogether, the results of the dissertation, besides enabling the modelling of natural microstructured materials, serve as a mainstay of a computational platform for the design and analysis of artificial metamaterials.
