Designs for a Cooler Planet

A human-centred employment service grew into a success story

More than half of highly educated immigrants find employment in their own field through KOSKE service, co-designed by Aalto University and the City of Espoo.

Participatory service design research brought residents and the city together to develop the service boldly, without preconceived assumptions.

The approach is based on valuing the skills that people bring to Finland and listening to the jobseeker. KOSKE aligns jobseekers’ strengths and career goals with labour market opportunities, says Annukka Svanda, doctoral researcher at Aalto University and project lead.

KOSKE is one of the first public services in Finland designed to meet the needs of highly educated immigrants.

“The Espoo example shows that public services can be made more equitable. The model can also be applied in other municipalities and services,” Svanda says.

Find this and dozens of other fresh perspectives, bold experiments and practical solutions in the autumn exhibition.
