Wastewater treatment technologies
EcoSTP 2023 conference
6th IWA EcoSTP 2023 conference (26-29/06/2023)

Ksenija Golovko presented a poster of her results at the 6th IWA ecoSTP2023 conference on eco-Technologies for Wastewater Treatment held in Girona, Spain, on the 26 – 29th of June, 2023. The presented work was focused on antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria reduction via ozonation/ultrasound processes and entitled "Implementing Ozone/Ultrasound for Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole removal and reducing antibiotic resistance in Finnish reject waters". Thank you to the coauthors and collaborators of this work: Antonina Kruglova, Kateryna Tsytlishvili, Raed Al-Juboori, Maria Valtari, Tuula Tuhkanen, and Anna Mikola.

IWA/WEF 2023 conference
WEF/IWA Conference 2023 (6-9/06/2023)

Lobna Amin presented her work titled “Tracking the formation potential of vivianite within the treatment train of full-scale wastewater treatment plants” at the WEF/IWA Innovations in Process Engineering Conference 2023 in Portland, Oregon, held from the 6th to 9th June 2023.
This research project focuses on phosphorus recovery in the form of vivianite from wastewater. Many thanks to the supervision of Anna Mikola and Raed Al-Juboori from Aalto University and Mathieu Sperandio from INSA Toulouse, and to the project partners: Marina Graan and Kati Blomberg from Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY), and Melissa Lopez-Viveros and Sam Azimi from Service public de l’assainissement francilien (SIAAP). It was a great pleasure collaborating with Johan Lindén and Fredrik Lindroos from Åbo Akademi University.

IWA LET conference 2023
18th IWA LET Conference 2023 (29/05-2/06/2023)

The 18th IWA Leading-Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies (LET) was held in Daegu, South Korea, from the 29th of May to the 2nd of June, 2023. Key themes included emerging innovative, energy positive, and sustainable green water and wastewater technologies as well as sustainability, innovations in desalination, and monitoring and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Milla Sieranen presented results from nitrous oxide emission monitoring conducted at five Finnish wastewater treatment plants and some results from Oona Kinnunen’s Ph.D. project related to the links between nitrous oxide emissions and microbial community studies.
