Targeted construction material flows in Finland in 2035 and 2050

According to current projections, the use of virgin natural resources including fossil fuels, biomass, metals, and minerals is expected to increase by nearly 60 percent by 2060 if present trends continue. The objective of my doctoral dissertation is to examine the material flows in Finnish construction and to establish recommended benchmark values for them. This topic is of considerable significance, as the production of construction materials accounts for roughly half of the raw materials consumed globally each year, and approximately 90 percent of biodiversity loss stems from raw material extraction. In the first phase of the research, the focus is on identifying the most significant materials and material flows, thereby ensuring that the changes investigated in the subsequent phases of the study will yield the greatest possible impact.
